This self-contained online course will give public sector employees an understanding of the Act and their responsibility to it.

Developed and delivered by Open School BC for the Privacy and Legislation Branch within the Ministry of Labour and Citizens’ Services, this online training is designed for BC public sector employees and is intended to build awareness around the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy (FOIPP) Act.

After taking this training employees will be able to:

  • Recognize how the Act applies to their jobs
  • Understand their obligations in complying with the FOIPP Act
  • Know what to do if they receive a request for information
  • Comprehend the Privacy Impact Assessment (PIA) process
  • Know how to protect information

Course Delivery

The FOIPP Act Online Course has been created for public sector employees. This course can be taken on most standard computers with a web browser and internet connection.

This course is delivered through Open School BC’s Online Hosting Service, a state-of-the-art learning management system that provides a secure environment for online learning.  The Online Hosting Service currently provides online training to over 25,000 students in British Columbia. 

The online training format allows individuals to work at their own pace, anywhere, and anytime.  The training can be completed within approximately two hours.

The FOIPP Act Online Course is delivered with the following features:

  • Ability to track progress
  • Access to a discussion area to post questions
  • Key concepts are explained in an engaging manner
  • Downloadable “Tip Sheets” with key points for quick reference
  • Interactive self-test quizzes throughout the training
