The Copyright Education Course was developed by Open School BC in conjunction with the Intellectual Property Program within the Ministry of Labour and Citizens' Services. The Intellectual Property Program is responsible for proper use and management of intellectual property created or owned by the BC government.

This course is a copyright information awareness program designed specifically for BC government employees. It was created to educate individuals on the proper procedures and protocols relating to copyright law in the workplace.

This 1- to 1.5-hour online training course covers five key themes in detail:

  1. Copyright goes into the legal definitions of copyright and how the law pertains to you.
  2. Moral Rights illustrates the meaning of moral rights, and explains how they work.
  3. Infringement identifies how copyright and moral rights can be infringed and provides some examples of the penalties for infringement.
  4. Fair Dealing provides instructions on when and how material can be used without infringing copyright.
  5. Handling Requests covers what to do when you receive a request for material owned by the BC government.

After completing the Copyright Education course, you will be able to:

  • Define copyright and explain who owns it, what it protects and for how long.
  • Define moral rights and explain: who owns moral rights, what these rights protect and for how long, and how and when those rights can be waived.
  • Define infringement and explain: how copyright and moral rights can be infringed, and what the penalties are for that infringement.
  • Define fair dealing and explain how and when fair dealing occurs.
  • Handle requests for materials where the copyright is owned by the BC government, and identify where to go for more information about copyright and other intellectual property issues if required.

Each section has a self-test quiz that acts as a review to reinforce what you have learned. There are no formal assessments in this course. Once you have finished all five sections, you will receive a Certificate of Completion as proof of completion of the course.
