101 Resources for Researching Debate Issues
It is good to start investigating debate issues fairly early in the course.
At latest, start by the beginning of Module 4. It is likely that many
of your Issues Log entries for Module 4 will be related to the issue.
If you are working by yourself on the project, you will be able to select
your issue and side. It is best not to choose which side you are on until
you have investigated both sides (or all sides) of the issue.
If you are working in a group, your instructor may lead the choice of
an issue and provide directions about the process. For example, there
may be several students on each side, with each student taking one facet
of the issue. The debate format may include rebuttals, or there may be
a period of questions from other students.
The following lists will give you a head start on locating resources for
Issues Log entries and debate information. (Note: There aren't exactly
"101 Resources." The number in the title is just meant to mean
"lots of resources.") The publications listed were selected
by a librarian.
The "givens" in the list are points that both sides would probably
accept. Discussing them would not be a good use of debate time.
