Safety–Safety Rules and Safety Symbols

    Introduction

Safety in science is important. The experiments you perform for the course may seem simple and safe, but some scientific experiments can be dangerous. Good safety habits are essential for good science.

One of the great things about taking a science course is the opportunity for hands-on learning. Some of these activities involve chemicals, such as acids, bases, poisonous salts, and flammable materials. Although all these chemicals can be found in the average home, they must be handled with care.

Three important key rules of safety are:

    1. Never do any experiment without the approval and direct supervision of your teacher or another responsible adult.
    2. Always carefully read the instructions before beginning an activity.
    3. Never taste anything or directly smell an unknown chemical.
