The Experiment
The student decided for his experiment to test the effectiveness of antibacterial soap under the following conditions:
Antibacterial Soap
Regular Hand Soap
Control
100 hands
100 hands
100 hands
Suppose the student used a device that could rapidly count the number of bacteria on a person’s hand.
To set up the experiment, the student made sure that all washing sinks were clean and disinfected, and that the washing water temperature was always the same. 150 volunteers were instructed to wash their hands only once per day. On the first day (Day 0) the student had volunteers wash their hands with regular soap and warm water. On the second day (Day 1), each group used only the soap that was assigned to it. The volunteers did not know which type of soap they were using. Volunteers were instructed not to wash their hands at any other time than during the day.
