    How to Use this Resource

The Science Orientation Skills (SOS) is an online student resource for the basic skills of Grade 10 Science. SOS consists of three parts: Scientific Literacy, The Scientific Method, and Safety.

Scientific Literacy is studied in the first section of this package.  Literacy in science is defined as the ability to understand and use the language and processes of science.

The Scientific Method is examined in the second section. It involves the skills and knowledge associated with science as a process (e.g., observing, predicting, and hypothesizing). In your science course, you will perform experiments using the scientific method, and use models to explain how systems operate. From your observations, you will collect, organize, and present data using tables and graphs.

Safety, the focus of the last section, is enormously important and must always be considered before starting any activity. Although most of the chemicals and equipment used in the course are commonly found in most kitchens, some of them have special hazards that you need to be aware of. You will also learn safety procedures that will apply to lab courses in higher grades, in post-secondary courses, and even in the workplace. Every activity in your science class will have safety procedures clearly spelled out.

This Science Orientation Skills resource contains six lessons:

    Scientific Literacy:
    Determining Fact from Fiction
    Comparing Science and Technology
    The Scientific Method:
    Hypothesizing in Science
    Writing a Lab Report
    Safety:
Understanding Safety Rules and Safety Symbols
    Reviewing for Your Safety Quiz

Every lesson contains “tools for success”, which will allow you to deepen your understanding and appreciation of key concepts in science. The first four lessons include guided practices, and most of the lessons include an assignment.
