Roman Bridges

Roman bridges could be found throughout the empire. Most of them had arches.

In an arch, each stone block is tapered. This means the top part of the block is wider than the bottom. When downward force is applied to the arch, the blocks wedge tighter together. The result is an extremely strong and durable structure—in this case, a bridge.
