Module 4: Enhancing an Inclusive School Culture for Students with Complex Needs
Introduction
The purpose of modules 1, 2, and 3 is to explain why inclusion of complex students is important, how it has evolved over time, and Inclusion Outreach’s foundations for practice. In this module, the focus turns inward to identify the ways you can enhance and expand your inclusive practice to include students with complex needs and addresses the barriers and challenges you could encounter. This module introduces the elements of developing an inclusive school culture for all students. Those elements are self-awareness, positive language, and removing ableist practice.
What you will learn:
- How what you think, feel, and act relates to what you believe, value, and the standards (ethics) you choose to live by
- The power of language and how it can impact students with disabilities, and how they are perceived and included
- How to recognize and move away from ableist practice towards inclusive practice
