Module 6: Connecting Students with Complex Needs to Literacy in the B.C. Curriculum
Why Focus on Literacy?
We believe students with complex needs can and deserve to learn print literacy skills. It is now recognized that AAC users need to be equipped with meaningful literacy skills. Accessible and appropriate literacy instruction can enhance students’ ability to self-generate language, allow them to access new and interesting vocabulary connected to the curriculum, and to engage with mainstream technologies (social media). This will prepare students to participate in the social, educational, and vocational activities of modern communities.
What is Literacy?
- Literacy is an inclusive, functional skill for students with complex needs and is an important component of their quality of life.
- Literacy is a human right.
- Literacy is a foundation for increasing independence, participation and inclusion.
- Literacy empowers communication, gives the student tools for self-expression beyond speech, and supports academic success.
