Module 6: Connecting Students with Complex Needs to Literacy in the B.C. Curriculum

Identifying Access Points

It’s important to identify how a student will be able to engage with literacy and what their access point(s) could be. Access points will be individualized for each student to determine how they will best engage with different literacy materials.

Things to consider when thinking about access points include:

  • Interests and strengths of the student: What is the student interested in? What topics would they like to see in literacy materials? What are their strengths? What kinds of activities does the student enjoy or excel at?
  • Ways of communicating: How does the student communicate or express themselves? What type(s) of AAC do they use?
  • Cognitive and sensory considerations: What types of tools does the student need? What modifications may be needed? What does physical access for the student look like? Are there other considerations related to vision or hearing?
