Module 7: Communication

Language and Learning in the Classroom for Students with Complex Needs

As previously discussed, it is challenging for students with complex needs to develop conventional communication. In this last section, we will discuss how difficulties with understanding language and using speech can affect a student’s learning and meaningful inclusion in today’s classrooms.

As you have learned, students with complex needs can have intellectual, physical, and sensory learning difficulties. This can impact processing rates and memory, making it hard for them to learn new words. Students with a limited vocabulary will require more support to:

  • Ensure their understanding of what is being said in class
  • Understand what they are expected to do
  • Know how to participate in classroom conversations
  • Learn

Understanding the communication of the classroom is essential for meaningful inclusion.
