McCarthyism The Age of McCarthyism: A Brief History with Documents: A good site with lots of interesting links. The Spartacus Encyclopedia article on McCarthyism: An interesting site linking McCarthyism to the Red Scare of the 1920s.
North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) The NATO Official Webpage: This site is kept up to date regularly, and will be useful for learning about the recent activities of NATO. (US) Documents Relating to NATO:
The Korean War Forgotten Heroes: Canada and the Korean War (1950-1953): An interesting site, primarily from the military viewpoint. Underlines the contribution of Canadians in the Conflict. The Korean War: A site that emphasizes the United Nations involvement in the war, possibly to excess. But it does have a detailed chronology of the events of the war.
The Hungarian Revolution The 1956 Hungarian Revolution: An interesting site, trying to deal with the West's unwillingness to help the Hungarian Revolution. Time Magazine's "Man of the Year: 1956 the Hungarian Freedom Fighter:" These sites have interesting information on the Hungarian Freedom Fighters from various perspectives.
The Berlin Wall The Berlin Wall Online: Lots of information about the wall, a timeline of its history, and many photographs. The Berlin Wall: Similar information to the previous site, but in considerably more detail. There is also many links to other sites. East - West Relations: History of Germany: This site gives an encapsulated history of Ancient and Modern Germany. Focus on relations between East Germany and West Germany from 1949 to reunification and the end of the Cold War. East Germany: A favourable account of East Germany
The Cuban Missle Crisis Memories of the Cuban Missle Crisis: Fascinating sites with video of President Kennedy, and news stories from the events as they happened, and an interactive site with maps and discriptions of the events. The Cuban Missile Crisis: Another interesting site, this one contains the exchange of letters between Kennedy and Khruschev (in Russian and translated.) Fourteen Days in October: The most detailed site possible, it requires RealAudio to take sull advantage of the site.
The Soviet Union The Soviet Union Factbook: This site had basic information about the USSR, it's leaders, state security organizations, military ranks and flags. The Soviet Union and the United States: Lots of new information out of the Archives of the former Soviet Union.
Prague Spring Central Europe Online: These sites contain detailed information about the Czech rebellion. Prague Spring, 1968: Pro-Czech, but esentially fair. Lech Walesa: This site has a biography of Lech Walesa. Perestroika: These interesting sites deal with Perestroika and the Soviet Union's beginning to move to a market economy. Glasnost: Policy Analysis: Gorbachev and Glasnost - a new Soviet Order - Implications for US Foreign Policy. This site was developed before the collapse of the Soviet Union, but still has interesting material. Boris Yeltsin: A basically pro-Yeltsin site, with an enormous amount of information. The Commonwealth of Independent States: A simple, clear explanation of this complex part of the world.
The United Nations Welcome to the United Nations: This site deals with the UN in a simple, straight-forward manner. The United Nations: System of Organizations: This site links to all of the sites of the UN agencies. United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO): The UNESCO home page details the work of the vital organization. The Food and Agricultural Organization: The FAO home page details the work of the organization and had many links of interest. United Nations Children's Emergency Fund: The UNICEF Home Page. International Labour Organization: The home page of the ILO. Peacekeeping Operations: The official UN Peacekeeping site.
