Determining Fact from Fiction
Introduction
The study of science is wide-ranging and fascinating. Scientists discover cures for diseases, develop alternative sources of fuel, invent machines to improve the way we do work, and find new and innovative ways to explore space. Science is more than a collection of facts and figures about things that exist and events that take place in the natural world. The real value of science is based on the questions we ask, the predictions we make, and the way we test those predictions. Science is a way of thinking.
The scientific process is a way of asking and testing good questions, and has led to such diverse things as decoding the human genome, sending people to outer space, and providing an explanation for, and a way to predict, natural disasters such as the tsunami that devastated Southeast Asia in 2004.
