How to Use this Resource
The Science Orientation Skills (SOS) package is a student resource for the process skills of science. SOS consists of four parts: Scientific Literacy, The Scientific Method, Safety and the Toolbox. The Toolbox can also be found online here.
1. |
Scientific Literacy is the first section in this package. Science refers to a body of knowledge and a system of acquiring new knowledge. Literacy refers to the ability to use language. Therefore, scientific literacy means the ability to use and understand the language and processes of science. |
2. |
The Scientific Method involves the skills and knowledge associated with science as a process (e.g., observing, predicting, and hypothesizing). In this science course, you will perform experiments using the scientific method, graph the results, and use models to explain how systems operate. |
3. |
Safety, the third section, is part of scientific investigations and should always be considered before starting any activity. Although most of the chemicals and equipment used in the course are commonly found in the kitchen, you will learn lab safety that will apply in higher grades, in post-secondary courses, and in the workplace. |
4. |
The Toolbox is the final section. It contains helpful tools, such as how to use graphic organizers and how to write a formal lab report. |
