Graphing—continued
|
Before graphing:
Collect your data (using a table)
Identify your variables:
- Independent variable: the variable that you change or manipulate during your experiment. This means you choose which numbers to record. For example, time is often used as an independent variable. You might wish to record measurements in every second of time, or every 10 seconds, or every 5 minutes, etc.
- Dependent variable: the variable that is affected by the changes made to the independent variable (this is usually what you are observing). For example, you may measure the distance travelled by a cyclist over a given time. You may choose to record the distance travelled every second, or every 10 seconds, or every 5 minutes, and so on. The distances you record depend on which time intervals you use. This means that distance depends on time.
