Module 2: Movement

Implications at School

For students with movement disabilities, consideration of the accessibility of the school grounds, buildings, and classrooms is essential for inclusion.

Students with movement disabilities may use adaptive equipment to enable participation, to move from one place to another, and to be positioned comfortably. You may see equipment such as orthotics, adapted classroom chairs, wheelchairs, walkers, standers, and lifts. Staff training, set-up, and planning is required when specialized equipment is needed.

When a student requires assistance with mobility, it can sometimes require multiple personnel to lift the student in and out of the wheelchair. This can take considerable time during the school day resulting in time away from the classroom. With careful planning, the school team can ensure that a student’s in-classroom learning time is optimized. We will discuss detailed strategies for supporting students in a later module.
