Module 6: Medical Complexities
Introduction
Students with complex needs can also have co-occurring medical conditions that impact their quality-of-life and affect their participation at school. Students with these conditions can require time away from the classroom because of illness and for appointments with a variety of medical specialists.
Medical procedures performed at school can also necessitate time spent out of the classroom. The intensity of these types of medical interventions in the classroom are often beyond the experiences of staff and other students. Support and education are tools that guide educators and classmates to include students with co-occurring medical conditions.
What You Will Learn:
- An awareness of some medical conditions commonly experienced by students with complex needs
- The implications of medical conditions for learning and participation for students with complex needs
- The importance of explaining medical interventions to other students in the class
