    Graphing—continued

    Step 2. Labelling the Graph

    Decide what your graph is about. Your title should give people an idea of what it is that you’re graphing. Put your title at the top of your graph. Identify your variables.

    Meaningful Title: We are graphing the position of a jogger over a specific time interval. Some possible names for the graph are:

    1. Position versus Time
    2. Jogger’s Position versus Time
    3. Position of a Jogger Over Time

    Any of these would be okay. We’ll use the second one for our example.

    Independent Variable: Since the position of the jogger depends on when (as in the time) it’s measured, the independent variable is time measured in seconds. Label the x-axis “time (s).”

    Dependent Variable: The dependent variable is the jogger’s position measured in metres. Label the y-axis “ position (m)”
