The equivalency certification is a result of an inter-provincial agreement (Agreement on Internal Trade) that allows provinces to recognize certified skills from other jurisdictions in Canada. In B.C., equivalency candidates must complete a regulatory exam to ensure familiarity with B.C. jurisdictional regulations to obtain certification.
Following successful completion of the online exam, an interview with an Inspector of Mines is required to determine whether the candidate is sufficiently knowledgeable/qualified for the applicable shiftboss certification.
Proof of equivalent certification from another jurisdiction must be provided at the interview.
Have a current, valid shiftboss competency certificate from a jurisdiction within Canada.
Be over 18 years of age.
Be conversant with the English language.
Be the holder of a first aid certificate to a standard required by the Chief Inspector.
Have an adequate knowledge of the Mines Act, the Regulations, the Code, and of other information and material considered necessary by the Board of Examiners, including mine safety, mine rescue, and blasting practices and procedures.

The Exam:
Covers regulatory requirements as per the Health, Safety, and Reclamation Code for Mines in BC.
Covers technical requirements, including blasting and mine rescue.
May take up to two hours and must be completed in one sitting.
Requires a score of 75% or higher to pass.
You may take up to eight weeks (from the time of registration) to pass the exam. You have three attempts to pass the exam. If you fail an attempt, you must wait at least one week before trying again.

Purchasing a Shiftboss Underground Equivalency Certification I am acknowledging the following terms:
I am 18 years of age or over.
I have the pre-required experience and knowledge of Underground mining as per the Code requirements.
I'm a holder of a first aid certificate to a standard required by the chief inspector.
I have an email address, a computer with high-speed (1 Mbps or better) internet access, and I'm familiar with a computer, sending email, and using the Internet.
I am aware the exam may take up to two hours to complete and must be completed in one sitting.
I am aware that I am allowed a maximum of three attempts to pass the exam with a score of 75% or greater. If I do not pass after three attempts, a new certification seat must be purchased before I can attempt the BC Mines Shiftboss Underground Equivalency exam again.
I have up to eight weeks from receiving confirmation of my registration to complete the exam.
I am aware that I must participate in an interview with an Inspector of Mines in order to complete the certification.
I am aware the BC Mines Shiftboss Underground Equivalency Certification does not qualify me for any other certification.
