BC Mine Shiftboss - Open Pit Certification
Overview
Completing the BC Mine Shiftboss - Open Pit certification process qualifies individuals to supervise workers engaged in the activity of mining on the surface of a mine.
A BC Mine Shiftboss Certification costs $100, which covers the online course and exam registration, the certification interview, and the issuance of the certification.
Note: "Online course" refers to a learning management system (LMS) called Moodle, which houses course content, and provides access to the online exams.
About BC Mine Shiftboss - Open Pit Certification
In order to apply for this certification, you must:
- Be over 18 years of age.
- Be conversant in the English language.
- Be the holder of a first aid certificate to a standard required by the Chief Inspector.
- Have an adequate knowledge of the Mines Act, the Regulations, the Code, and other information and material considered necessary by the Board of Examiners, including mine safety, mine rescue, and blasting practices and procedures.
- Have at least three years of relevant experience working in a mine
- Alternatively, you can have a degree or diploma in engineering from a university or technical institute approved by the Board of Examiners. In that case, you must also have at least one year of experience, which the Board of Examiners must approve.
Documentation for the interview:
- A completed and signed BC Mine Shiftboss Certification Application Form.
- Valid first aid certificate to a standard required by the Chief Inspector.
- Proof of ID.
The online course provides:
- An overview of all BC Mine Shiftboss Certifications.
- Access to supporting resources, including a digital copy of the Code, which you must read before taking the exams.
- Access to the online exam.
- Access to a BC Mine Shiftboss Certification Application Form, and information on how to set up an interview with an Inspector of Mines.
The exam:
- Covers regulatory requirements as per the Health, Safety, and Reclamation Code for Mines in BC.
- Covers technical requirements, including blasting and mine rescue.
- Must be completed in one sitting of no longer than three hours.
- Requires a minimum score of 75% to pass.
- You may take up to eight weeks from the time of registration to pass the exam. You have three attempts to pass the exam. If you fail an attempt, you must wait at least one week before trying again.

Purchasing a chasing a BC Mine Shiftboss – Open Pit Certification, I acknowledge the following terms:
- I'm 18 years of age or over.
- I have the prerequisite experience and knowledge of open pit mining as per the Code requirements.
- I'm a holder of a first aid certificate to a standard required by the Chief Inspector.
- I have an email address, a computer with high-speed internet access (1 Mbps or better), and I'm familiar with a computer, sending email, and using the internet.
- I am aware that the exam may take up to three hours to complete and must be completed in one sitting.
- I am aware that I am allowed a maximum of three attempts to pass the exam with a score of 75% or greater. If I do not pass after three attempts, a new certification seat must be purchased before I can attempt the BC Mine Shiftboss - Open Pit exam again.
- I have up to eight weeks from receiving confirmation of my registration to complete the exam.
- I am aware that I must participate in an interview with an Inspector of Mines to complete the certification.
- I am aware that the BC Mine Shiftboss - Open Pit Certification does not qualify me for any other certification.
- I have read and understand the refund policy.
