BC Mine Shiftboss Online Certification Program

Mines Logo BC Mine Shiftboss Online Certification Program

As required by the Health, Safety and Reclamation Code for Mines in BC (Code), to supervise more than six workers engaged in a mining activity on the surface of any mine, or to supervise any number of workers in an underground mine, you must obtain a BC Mine Shiftboss Certification. BC Mine Shiftboss Certifications are obtained through an online exam and an interview process.

A BC Mine Shiftboss Certification costs $100, which covers the online course and exam registration, the certification interview, and the issuance of the certification.

Note: "Online course" refers to a learning management system (LMS) called Moodle, which houses course content, and provides access to the online exams.

You must pass an online exam specific to the type of Shiftboss Certification.

The online exam process is as follows:

  • The exam can be attempted up to three times.
  • If the exam is not completed within the time limit, it counts as one of the three attempts.
  • After a failed attempt, a one-week waiting period is required before the exam can be retaken.
  • The exam must be passed within eight weeks from receiving confirmation of registration to complete the exams.

Once you pass the exam, you are eligible for an interview with an inspector of mines.

Important notes

  • Certifications are valid from their date of issue and do not expire. However, to keep your shiftboss certificate valid, you must maintain a current first aid certification to a standard required by the Chief Inspector, as per the Code.
  • You must be at least 18 years old to work in a mine.
