How many questions on the exam? 50 multiple choice questions
Is there a time limit? 1 hour
Can I use a translator? Check with your invigilator. They will decide if a translator will affect the fairness of the exam.

What mark do I need to pass the exam? 70% or higher
How many tries do I have to write the exam? Up to 2 tries, depending on how you score on the first try:

  • If you score 59% or less on the first try, you fail the course and are not allowed a second try.

  • If you score between 60% and 69% on the first try, you have not passed the course but are allowed a second try.

  • If you score 69% or less on the second try, you fail the course.

I can't find the exam password

Below is a list of courses that require a password to start the exam, along with instructions on where to find it.

Invigilators receive the FOODSAFE Level 1 exam password when the following conditions are met:

  1. The student has requested them through the Level 1 Account Manager.
  2. The invigilator has set a meeting date and location for the exam in the Invigilator Account Manager.

When the conditions above are met, invigilators can find the exam password on the requests page in the Invigilator Account Manager.

Invigilators receive the MarketSafe (for potential instructors) exam password when the following conditions are met:

  1. The student has requested them through the MarketSafe Account Manager.
  2. The invigilator has set a meeting date and location for the exam in the Invigilator Account Manager.

When the conditions above are met, invigilators can find the exam password on the requests page in the Invigilator Account Manager.

What is an invigilator?

Invigilators are people who supervise exams to make sure they are completely fairly. Only two of our online courses require you to have an invigilator for your exam - FOODSAFE Level 1 Online and MarketSafe Online (for Potential Instructors only).

The invigilator you choose will be provided with instructions and a password to unlock your FOODSAFE Level 1 Online or MarketSafe Online exam.

Use the Level 1 Account Manager or MarketSafe Account Manager to select an invigilator. You may request someone you know, so long as they meet the invigilator criteria, or you may choose from a list of pre-approved invigilators using the account manager websites.

If requesting someone you know, they must meet the following criteria.

They are at least 19 years old
They are not related to you or a member of your immediate family
They are not a member of your household
They have an email address

I can't find an invigilator

Did you know you have the option to choose from three different types of invigilators to supervise your exam? If you're having trouble finding one, we recommend exploring all available options.

Invigilator Type Description
Online Many learners prefer using an online invigilator to oversee their exams. Our online invigilators have limited availability, which changes daily based on their existing schedules. If you're keen on having an online invigilator, please monitor your Level 1 Account Manager at https://eservicebc.ca/foodsafe/STUDENT/ to check for their availability. Alternatively, you can consider the bring your own or face-to-face invigilator options.
Bring Your Own If you're unable to find an available online invigilator, you can opt to bring your own. As long as the individual is over 19 years old, unrelated to you or a member of your immediate family, not part of your household, and has a valid email address, they can supervise your exam using an online meeting application or in person. Use your Level 1 Account Manager at https://eservicebc.ca/foodsafe/STUDENT/ to request a Bring Your Own invigilator.
Face-to-Face Another option for you to consider is using one of our face-to-face invigilators. These invigilators can meet you in person to oversee your exam. The cost of your course includes a face-to-face invigilator. If any invigilator requests payment for their services, please decline and promptly report them to us at https://openschool.bc.ca/tech_service/. Use your Level 1 Account Manager at https://eservicebc.ca/foodsafe/STUDENT/ to request a face-to-face invigilator.
